Message requests
Where messages from people who found you by username wait, and how to answer or block them.
On this page
When someone finds you by your @username and messages you for the first time, the chat goes to Requests instead of your main list. That way, people you don't know can't fill up your chats.
See your requests
On the Chats screen, tap the Requests chip. It only appears when someone is waiting, and it shows how many.
Answer a request
Open the chat. A notice explains that this person found you by your username, so they have never had your phone number and can't see it.
- Reply to accept. The chat moves into your normal list.
- Block if you don't want to hear from them. See Block someone.
You can also report the account if the message is abusive or spam.
Frequently asked questions
Do people know I've seen their request?
Opening a request may mark the messages as read, depending on your read receipts setting. Blocking someone never tells them.
How do I stop people finding me by username?
Turn off Searchable username in Settings > Privacy. See Choose or change your username.
