Clear a chat

Clearing removes every message in the chat from your phone, but keeps the chat in your list.

1. Long-press the chat (or tap its photo) and tap Clear Conversation. Or open the profile and tap Clear Conversation (Clear chat in a group).
2. Confirm.

In a group, clearing is CLEAR FOR ME: it affects only you.

Delete a chat

Deleting removes the conversation from your list.

1. Long-press the chat (or tap its photo).
2. Tap Delete Chat, and confirm.

For a group, the option is Exit Group or Exit and Delete Group. See Leave or delete a group.

Frequently asked questions

If they send a new message, does the chat come back?

Yes. A new message brings the conversation back to your list, starting from that message.

Can I delete a chat without blocking the person?

Yes. Deleting a chat doesn't block anyone. To stop someone messaging you, see Block someone.
