Group settings and permissions
Change a group's name, icon and description, and control what members are allowed to do.
Open the group and tap its name at the top to open the group profile.
Name, icon and description
- Edit Name renames the group.
- Change Icon sets a new group picture.
- About Group is the group's description.
By default only admins can change these. See Edit group settings below.
Group permissions
Tap Group permissions (Control who can edit info or send messages). Admins can choose:
| Permission | When it's limited to admins |
|---|---|
| Edit group settings | Only admins can change the name, icon and description. |
| Send messages | Only admins can send messages. Members see Only admins can send messages. Useful for announcement groups. |
| Add other members | Only admins can add people. |
| Disappearing messages | Only admins can turn disappearing messages on or off, and members no longer see the option. |
Other group settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| All Media | Everything shared in the group. |
| Mute notifications | Silence the group for you. Mentions still reach you. |
| Disappearing messages | A timer for new messages, for everyone in the group. |
| Chat lock | Hide the group behind biometrics, for you. |
| Read receipts | Always on in groups. Everyone sees when you've read a message. |
| Clear chat | Remove all messages in the group from your phone. |
| Group Call | Start a call with the group. |
The participant list at the bottom shows every member. Use Search participants to find someone.
